Should Clarke County shell out $65,000 per to join a park authority?
That's one of the things discussed today at the Board of Supervisors meeting.
It's an out of business golf course that could become a historic battlefield.
?There are concerns. It's a major land use change for the community, and the residents have to be comfortable that it's something they can live with since it's right there,? says Natural Resources Planner Alison Teetor.
Teetor said that there are many notable pros to the idea, but there are some aspects that are still up for debate.
?In terms of the county, it's a high dollar price tag in a bad budget year, which we've had many of lately. Coming up with an additional $65,000 is a big ticket item for us,? says Teetor.
So before paying for that big ticket item, the county wants more input. They want park authority officials and the people who live on the property to all get in the same room and hash out the details.
A public information meeting about the topic is scheduled for January 26. The Board of Supervisors has until May to commit to the project.
One project that is not looking for extra cash is the high school.
The new construction came in $600,000 under budget.
?That's good news for everyone because those additional funds will go into other projects that the schools desperately need,? says Superintendent Mike Murphy.
The county is also looking to become more green.
This year they want to make it a priority to be more conscious of their carbon footprint.
