Enbridge Energy Superior-Chicago Pipeline Shuts Down after Oil Spill

(Northland's NewsCenter) ---A pipeline carrying crude oil that leaked 1200 barrels of oil into a Wisconsin field has been contained.

A spokesperson from Enbridge Energy Partners reported the oil leaked out of a pipeline near Grand Marsh WI, around 2:45 on Friday.

The pipeline, line 14, runs from Superior to refineries in the Chicago area.

Enbridge emergency crews responded to the field where the oil leaked after Enbridge Pipeline Control Center employees detected a drop in pressure and shut down the pipeline.

Nobody was hurt. The cause of the spill is still under investigation.

Enbridge does not know when the pipeline might restart.

"Enbridge is treating this situation as a top priority," Richard Adams, vice president of Enbridge U.S. Operations said in a press release. "We are brining all necessary resources to bear. Our immediate focus is on keeping our workers and the public safe as we work to remove the oil and clean up the site."

Line 14 was installed in 1998, and has a capacity to carry 317,600 barrels of oil per day.

Philippine gunmakers take aim in election year

MANDAUE CITY, Philippines?? In the Philippines, they vote with their trigger fingers. Elections mean big business for illegal gunsmiths, who are looking forward to 2013 mid-term polls.

With election-related violence commonplace, the Philippines imposes a ban on the carrying of guns for six months, from campaigning to the proclamation of winners.

With legal access denied, Filipinos simply turn to the many illegal gunsmiths who ply their trade in back alleys and on the edge of rice fields despite government crackdowns.

In Danao City, in the northeast of central Cebu island, they are already anticipating a windfall.

"There's actually huge demand for guns, especially now and because of the elections next year," said a 33-year-old gunsmith, who asked to be named only as Remo, as he hammered away at bits of scrap metal in a makeshift factory in Danao.

Loud music drowned out the noise of Remo's workshop on the edge of a dry creek, hidden from view by thick bamboo groves, as he and two assistants hammered, filed and drilled away.

"We are actually having some difficulty in keeping up with the orders because it usually takes at least two weeks to make one .45 caliber pistol, even if I work 16 hours a day," he said.

Legal industry
As the pro- and anti-gun lobbies in the United States agonize over how to respond to yet another massacre of innocents, in the Philippines many want even more liberal gun laws to boost production of a small but growing legal industry.

Guns have long been part of everyday life in the Philippines, especially since the end of World War Two.

After the war, farmers took up arms during agrarian unrest in the late 1940s and early 1950s and then a Maoist insurgency that has become one of the world's longest-running conflicts.

Today, all private security guards in the Philippines carry either handguns or shotguns, or both. Guns are a common sight in shopping malls, government and private offices, banks, restaurants and even schools.

"When we were children, we were already surrounded by guns. It was the world of our fathers," said Elmer Genzon, a third-generation gunsmith who once made "paltik", or illegal weapons, out of scrap metal and bits of angle iron.

"We grew up making guns."

According to www.gunpolicy.org, a site hosted by the University of Sydney's School of Public Health in Australia, there are about 3.9 million guns -- legal and illegal -- held by civilians in the Philippines, or about 4.7 per 100 people.

That puts the Philippines 105th place on a list of 179 countries, tiny in comparison to the 88.8 per 100 in the United States and behind even Australia with 15 per 100.

While it is impossible to count the number of illegal guns in the Philippines, the national police estimate there are about 350,000, again paltry in comparative terms to Central and South American weapons hotspots like Guatemala, Honduras and Colombia.

Yet the Philippines suffers worryingly high gun-crime rates.

According to the latest available figures from the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, there were 8.9 homicides per 100,000 people in 2003, by far the worst in Asia and outstripping Europe.

While not at the levels of Central and South America, the number was still almost triple that of the United States, which had 3.3 homicides per 100,000 people the same year.

Illegal guns are not just carried by criminal gangs, Maoist rebels and Muslim separatists. They also belong to civilians and politicians who keep private armies.

Investigations into the Ampatuan family, a political clan linked to the 2009 massacre of 57 people, including dozens of journalists, found more than 1,000 high-powered weapons, including mortars and .50 caliber machineguns.

Health plan
In the 2004 elections, authorities decided to crack down on illegal gunsmiths in Cebu. There had been more desultory attempts to act against an industry dating back to the early 1900s.

Police closed the Genzon family's home factory on the edge of a rice field during the 2004 crackdown.

Like other gunsmiths from his hometown, he was soon working at the government-registered Shooters' Arms Manufacturing factory about 25 km (15 miles) down the road in Mandaue City.

"We no longer have to worry about police raids and we also have a steady source of income, plus some health and other social benefits," Genzon, 33, told Reuters while he wrapped a handcrafted model of a 1911 Colt .45 destined for a dealer in Rochester, New York.

A small army of 400 workers assembles revolvers and pistols at the Mandaue factory, which exports guns to the United States, Australia, Italy and Thailand.

Factory owner Romulo de Leon III, a second-generation gun dealer, quickly recognized the unusual skills developed by the illegal, backyard gunsmiths when he decided to switch from selling imported weapons to making his own.

His partly automated factory now produces about 20,000 guns a year, with up to 85 percent of them sold abroad, making him the second largest gun manufacturer in the Philippines.

With cheap labor and Filipino ingenuity, de Leon wants to expand into new markets in Eastern Europe and South America.

With more foreign markets in their gunsights, legal manufacturers hope President Benigno Aquino, a gun enthusiast who shoots competitively, will help liberalize gun laws.

"What we want is a more balanced gun legislation, not too restrictive, but we also understand that guns must be regulated," said Demetrio Tuason, head of the largest and oldest manufacturer in the Philippines, Armscor, at a Manila gun show.

Existing laws allow Filipinos to own one "long" firearm -- a rifle or shotgun -- and one handgun. Guns are meant to be licensed and owners must have permits to carry them in public.

Tuason wants gun licenses more like driving licenses, allowing people to "own as many guns as they can afford".

Not surprisingly, gun sellers also want to expand the industry, worth about 2.5 billion pesos ($59.37 million). Export receipts grew fourfold to $23.4 million between 2000-11.

But, just like in the United States, there seems little appetite to change existing laws. "That's not a priority right now," Aquino told Reuters in an interview earlier this month.

There are 34 gun-related bills before both houses of parliament, some seeking looser laws and others more control.

Supporters of two prominent bills seeking to outlaw civilians carrying guns in public and stiffer penalties for possession of illegal weapons have all but given up hope.

Much like the United States, guns are so deeply ingrained in Philippines culture that they don't expect the July 20 shooting in a Colorado cinema, in which 12 people were killed and 58 wounded, will have much of an impact.

"For the last 22 years we've been telling our lawmakers ... to pass a strict gun control law but nothing has happened," said Nandy Pacheco of the Gunless Society group.

"Our gun laws are encouraging a culture of guns, a culture of violence. When do we act? Are we waiting for a similar attack to happen here in our movie houses?"

Binoculars don't just bring birds into focus?they're a cheap, portable tool for zooming in on the night sky too. The handheld lenses let you examine a wide field of view, right side up and with both eyes, unlike most backyard telescopes. Robin Scagell, co-author of Stargazing With Binoculars, advises setting up shop a mile from well-lit areas. "Avoid looking at bright lights before you go out," he says. "And give yourself 20 minutes to let your eyes adapt to the darkness."

Start by checking out craters in the nearly full moon, which in the U.S. will be in the southeastern portion of the night sky in early August. Then look for Mars and Saturn hugging the horizon to the southwest. Pick up the trail of the Milky Way arcing overhead, and follow it to features such as the Butterfly Cluster and Eagle Nebula. To spot fainter objects, such as the Andromeda Galaxy, wait until the moon wanes. Scagell also suggests relying on more sensitive peripheral vision: Gaze to the side rather than directly at where an object is located. As midnight approaches on Aug. 11 and 12, set down the binoculars and face south to take in the fast bright streaks of the Perseids meteor shower.

LONDON?By all accounts, Nigeria?s basketball team shouldn?t even be in the 2012 Olympics. But former Arizona State standout and NBA veteran Ike Diogu willed them here with an incredible performance in this year?s FIBA qualifying tournament that featured upset wins over Lithuania and Greece, as well as a 25-point, 10-rebound showing by Diogu in a win over the Dominican Republic that punched Nigeria?s ticket to the Olympics for the first time.

On Sunday, Diogu and Nigeria kept the Cinderella story rolling when D?Tigers won their first-ever Olympic game, beating Tunisia, 60-56. Diogu finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Former Georgia Tech star Alade Aminu (whose brother, Hornets forward Al-Farouq Aminu, also plays for Nigeria) had 15 points and nine rebounds.

?It was our first-ever win at the Olympic Games so it has to be a historic day for us,? Diogu said. ?Now we showed everyone that we are the best team in Africa. We just played legitimate basketball to show the world who?s best in Africa.?

Diogu and Aminu were key in helping Nigeria to a 42-39 rebounding advantage. Coming into the opener against Tunisia, the reigning African champion, Nigeria was not expected to match up, size-wise, inside.

?They were bigger than us, but myself, Alade and the other guys proved we can fight for rebounds against any team in the world,? Diogu said.

Diogu?s international success comes as somewhat of a surprise given the way his NBA career went. He was chosen by the Warriors with the No. 9 pick in the 2005 draft, but his size (6-8) proved to be too much of an obstacle for him to succeed in an NBA frontcourt. He has bounced through six teams, playing 225 games, including two games with the Spurs this year before being waived and signing in Puerto Rico. He played briefly in China before rejoining the Puerto Rican league.

Though Nigeria produced one of the great NBA centers of all time, Hakeem Olajuwon, he never suited up for the national team, instead playing for Team USA. Thus, basketball on the international stage has never really caught on in the country?and even now, the bulk of Nigeria?s players were born in the U.S. But Diogu is hoping to change the perception of Nigerian basketball.

?I believe they were following us (in Nigeria),? Diogu said. ?Maybe now they will follow us even more.?

Mike Mularkey apparently wants to imprint his with a sledge hammer.

The Jaguars coach told Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union he planned to fine players $10,000 if they talk about injuries to the media.

Mularkey delivered that news in last night?s team meeting.

?They saw a lot of numbers last night,? Mularkey said. ?One of them, it was up there more than once, was about speaking about injuries. [Head trainer]?Mike Ryan talked about it, I had it up there more than once. Coordinators were told prior to that meeting every two weeks, two to three weeks I want you to stand in front of that room and tell them we?re not going to talk about injuries.

?Even if mom says, ?How are you feeling?? If you tell you mom, go call coach Mularkey. I?m going overboard.?

Mularkey wasn?t totally serious about the fines for talking to parents, but apparently to everyone else.

?Anything I know about a guy, anything I know is hurting on him, any comment he makes will play into how they attack a team or a position,? Mularkey said. ?I just don?t think it?s anybody else?s business. ? If I feel like it?s going to jeopardize us or compromise us, I will not talk about specific injuries. Right now we?re really not in a position where I don?t feel free to talk about them because I feel pretty good about our team right now. But I will be the only voice.?

Listen, that?s fine to play tough guy. The Jaguars could use a little order (as long as it doesn?t come with Jack Del Rio?s ax).

But British newspapers have reported the former world champion might play a role in the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday.

Of course, the downtown area, the shopping district and many other places were bustling with activity.? The Sumter County Recreation Department?opens the doors for youth football, cheerleading, baseball, softball and soccer youth registration, along with adult softball, on July 30.? Registration continues through August 16, with baseball and softball registration going until August 23.?

It?s no surprise that food is going to leave you more filled up than any drink will. Just think?would you rather eat a slice of cheese pizza or drink two cans of soda for dinner? The pizza. Clearly. But the calorie content in both are equal so cutting down on sugary drinks is an obvious no brainer in this situation.

One large mistake many people make with?calorie intake comes in the form of a beast we refer to as smoothies. Smoothies should not, I repeat, should NOT be had as drinks but rather as a meal. You?re probably thinking?but I?m getting so many good fruits and veggies?true, but unfortunately, smoothies are loaded in extra cals that should be used for a meal. We love you, Jamba Juice, but it?s just not in the cards for bikini season.

But now the real question is this: if you had to cut back, is it better to cut back on food or cocktails? What calories stick with you (ya know, on your tush)? Of course, this question has no?definite answer because eating excessive amounts but not drinking or vice-versa won?t help either way. Balance is key, but we can say the healthier option is probably to cut back on the alcohol intake to keep that skinny around for as long as possible. Yeah, you might have some friends who say, ?Ohhhh, I just drink most of my calories and don?t gain any weight!? Well, that?s a topic we?ll get into at another time, but um, eating is good. Yes, it is.

Now you may think?but food is so much heartier and heavier than any drink, so why would it be significantly worse gaining calories this way?

Well, when you drink alcohol, your body tends to view that as an energy source; then all the food you previously consumed (even in small amounts) will automatically be stored as fat. Your body uses energy from the alcohol in its place, thus burning that instead of the fat; then it?s time to say hello to muffin tops and love handles (don?t even get me started on those beer bellies).

A sign of successful day drinking.

Basically, your body has a tougher time burning fat when there?s alcohol present, so to those people who think they?re staying extra skinny by making their diets cocktail-based?I?m going to say no.

Plus, cocktails don?t keep you full, so you?d be drinking a lot more to feel any sort of ?full? satisfaction. And excessive alcohol intake is neither healthy for you nor your waistline. But let?s not get on the party pooper train quite yet. Just remember, everything in moderation is okay. And the occasional splurge is necessary. Even for those looking to lose weight, alcohol isn?t strictly forbidden.

Consider your options?the lowest calorie drink you can probably get is a low-cal beer (MGD 64, anyone?). Glasses of wine can run anywhere from 100 to 150 calories and cocktails with mixers ? don?t even get me started. Just remember this as a rule of thumb ? anything flavored or fruity, whether it?s a drink or straight shot, probably?has a lot more calories than something that tastes like rubbing alcohol (not saying you should actually go drink rubbing alcohol?).

And this even affects what you eat, too. When you consume alcohol, eat healthier food items for those drunchies (junk food is a no-no) and just be conscious of your intake. And if you drink, burn off that extra fat and increase your metabolism by exercising.

Summer is all about having fun, but keeping yourself in check is always a good thing. And if you?re ever noticing those little love handles pop out after a few too many nights on the town, as Jamie Foxx would say, ?Blame it on the al-al-al-al-al-alcohol.?

Foreign leaders see US 'in decline,' Romney told

SAN FRANCISCO -- Australia's foreign minister privately warned Sunday that foreign leaders see "America in decline," Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said.

Romney said he?met with Foreign Minister Bob Carr in a San Francisco hotel Sunday night?shortly before a Republican fundraiser.

He said Carr suggested that America could improve that international perception "with one budget deal" that helps balance the budget.

"And this idea of America in decline, it was interesting [Carr] said that; he led the talk of American being in decline," Romney said at the fundraiser, according to The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.?"And if they're thinking about investing in America, entrepreneurs putting their future in America -- if they think America's in decline they're not gonna do it."

The foreign minister requested the private meeting, a?Romney spokesman said. The campaign would not say whether the two discussed foreign policy.

Romney is scheduled to launch his first trip abroad as his party's presumptive presidential nominee later this week. He's set to meet with leaders in England, Israel and Poland.

I believe two of the greatest gifts and assets offered by aging Baby Boomers are:
EXPERIENCE AND WISDOM.

Our experience and wisdom gives Baby Boomers the potential to use our creative thinking and constructive ideas to create various kinds of skillful mental qualities. Keep in mind, as we persevere in growing old it is important in life we continue to mature - this also ads to our wisdom and experience.

A human's life span is traditionally divided into three stages, the first, the middle and the last stage. Of course, with attention to what is good and right, one should live a good life through all the three stages of life. However if, through negligence, one fails to fulfill the good life in the first and middle stages of life, there is still room left for one to fulfill it in the last one, that is, in one's old age when he or she has collected experience and wisdom.

Scientists?have found that even into our seventies our brains continue to produce new neurons. They also found that the aging brain might even provide unique advantages that form the basis for wisdom.? Studies have shown that a Baby Boomers aging brain is far more resilient than was previously believed. There are many people who are inspiring examples in showing the brain's ability to stay vital in their leter years by achieving huge accomplishments.?

If you needed repairs on your house, or on your car wouldn't you want someone with experience to do the work?? If you were going to have surgery wouldn't you want to have a surgeon with experience? If you were going to court wouldn't you want an attorney who had years of experience?? Life is full of countless examples where we would choose someone with experience because we know 'experience counts' where years and years of living gain this type of knowledge and wisdom.

A?Baby Boomer?might say, ' I know so much about life and how to live it well, that I've got some wonderful knowledge to share' and rightfully so. There have been many times that I have said to myself 'I only wish when I was younger I knew what I now know now about life.'? I bet you've said that a couple of times yourself.

Emerson once said: "As we grow old, the beauty steals inward."

As Baby Boomers we need to appreciate and share our inner beauty with others, and be confident that there are many gifts to give from our continuing experience.?

iPhone 3GS now available for $180 on Aircel India, and what that tells us about the budget iPhone future

The iPhone 3GS is now being offered, unlocked, for the equivalent of US$180 on India's Aircel network, provided customers sign up for minimum $55/year unlimited, post-paid data. plan That makes for a TCO (total cost of ownership) of only US$235, something far, far lower than the thousands of dollars typically required over the course of 2-year American cellular contract. Matthew Panzarino of the The Next Web reports:

Aircel is India?s 7th largest network, with a large share of customers where it is headquartered in Chennai. The iPhone is being offered for 9,999 Rs, which converts to $181 U.S., with a minimum commitment of 3,000 Rs in advance rental ($54.37), reports IBN Live. The advance rental, which roughly equates to a ?1 year up front payment of service?, brings the total cost of the phone to Rs. 12,999 ($236), which is still easily the cheapest we?ve seen the iPhone 3GS being offered yet.

The iPhone 3GS is 3 years old now, an eternity in smartphone time. While it doesn't have a Retina display or FaceTime camera, it does run iOS 5 and will be upgraded to iO6. It won't get all the features, especially hardware dependent ones, but it will stay binary compatible with modern App Store apps, and that's absolutely key.

As to pricing, when the iPhone 3GS launched in 2009, iSuppli's Andrew Rassweiler pegged the bill of goods for the then-entry level 16GB model at $172.46, with manufacturing expense of $6.50, for a total of $178.96.

In 2010, Apple dropped the memory in the iPhone 3GS down to 8GB, the on-contract price to $99, and the unlocked price to $549.In 2011, Apple kept the iPhone 3GS the same but dropped the on-contract price to $0, and the unlocked price to $375.

Economies of scale have likely pushed the iPhone 3GS bill of materials lower over the last 3 years. iSuppli estimates the current iPhone 4S has a bill of materials of $188, for a total manufacturing cost of $196, so it's hard not to imagine the iPhone 3GS isn't well below that now. Likewise, iPhone 3GS research and development costs have likely been more than offset over the intervening years. (It's important to remember with any bill of materials estimate that while the first production unit cost just over a hundred dollars in parts, the R&D getting to that point cost millions.)

Apple typically won't budge a penny on margins, and absent a statement from Aircel, it's hard to tell how much they're subsidizing the iPhone 3GS or data plan to get the TCO that low, but the simple fact remains -- there's now a sub-$250 iPhone on the market, all in.

The importance of that can't be overstated. While Apple enjoys top-selling status in North American, and unmatched profits, they currently do not compete, or compete well at least, in emerging markets, or markets where pre-paid plans dominate post-paid plans. When carriers don't subsidize the price of the iPhone, it costs significantly more than bargain basement Android or BlackBerry devices, making the latter more realistic options for budget shoppers.

In an earlier article on The Next Web, Panzarino wrote:

There are hundreds of millions of customers using pre-paid devices that would gladly replace their devices with a cost-effective iPhone, gaining access to Apple?s app library and its aggressive support for software updates on older devices.

That's exactly right. If Apple keeps the iPhone 3GS on the market for another year, and can bring the cost down significantly, it suddenly has a handset that's interesting in Africa, South America, Asia, and parts of Europe where phones and plans are decoupled, and sticker price is key.

As Daring Fireball's John Gruber pointed out:

[The iPhone 3GS] is sold around the world as a low cost (by iPhone standards at least) pre-paid device. So AT&T wouldn?t even carry the 3GS anymore, they?d just have the 4 as their ?free? iPhone, where the word free gets wrapped in dick quotes because it?s only free with an expensive two-year contract.

The big thing to remember about the iPhone 4 is that it?s the first CDMA iPhone. No way it?s going to disappear from the lineup, because now Apple could offer a ?free? iPhone on Verizon and Sprint, too.

Up until now, only AT&T in the U.S. has enjoyed a $0 iPhone on their network. Having a $0 on-contract iPhone on Verizon in particular is a big win, at least psychologically. Many customers don't or can't consider TCO, only up-front costs, when picking a new phone.

Even if Apple removes the iPhone 3GS from sale on the major carriers (it can't offer it for -$100 on-contract, after all), it can certainly keep it on small, regional U.S. carriers for customers that are far more price sensitive.

At that point, just like they did with the iPod line years ago, Apple has the market pretty much covered at every price point that matters.
