Orange San Diego revealed: Intel-powered phone to reach UK on June 6th for ?200

Orange took its time to decide, but now it's settled. The first European Intel-equipped smartphone is the San Diego, replacing the Santa Clara codename assigned to it since February's Mobile World Congress. It will launch on pay-as-you-go at £200, including £10 of credit -- although Orange tell us this will be an introductory price. On contract, prices will start at £15.50 per month for two years and Brits will be able to pick one up from June 6th. We're getting the full run-through from Orange UK and Intel, but we're itching to run our new benchmarks on the Medfield phone as soon as they let us at it. And that pesky Gingerbread OS? We've been told to expect Ice Cream Sandwich closer to the end of Q3. But with just the single carrier, we're hoping testing time could be shaved off significantly.

I know it certainly doesn?t come out from a bottle or through a needle of an injection or the nip and tuck of a plastic surgeon. True beauty exist ONLY in the mind eye. What we have come to regard today as ?true? beauty is something that came out from an advertisement firm that has been hired by corporations that ONLY know how to make this. But since they haven?t figured out how to market what they have manufactured ? they hire ad people, spin doctors and the whole motley crew to figure out how to sell to all of us. And along with moisturizing cream, eau de cologne, underwear briefs, these people have also whirled THEIR idea of what a successful person should look like, what should he wear, what kinda car should he drive, right to even what type of wife a successful man should have ? and the counterrevolution to this marketing manifesto is one sentence: THAT IS NOT WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT. Life is not about trying to be Peter Pan, we all can?t look as good as we used too, at 18. We can try under the surgeons knife- but that?s really a dead end. What we should perhaps understand about the whole idea of beauty is it has nothing to do with what people are trying to sell us things 24/7 regularly force feed us with ? instead, it has everything to do with how beauty is an evolving thing, like a tree. When it is young, it is frisky, in midlife serious, as an old tree stately and in it?s final hours ? it is at peace. It is this progression that is beautiful ? but the world has embellished this true version of beauty and supplanted it for tight bodies, high ridged noses, fuller lips et al. The whole works, from your make up to scents and even coloring the way you dress.

It is only when we understand that true beauty resides in the progression of life at every stage from cradle to grave can we really begin to appreciate the nuances of it?s multifacetted beauty ? The way a woman at 35,, may even look more attractive than a nubile teen ? as only at 35, will her hips acquire a fullness, the curl of her lips begin to settle at the right tension, not to loose or tight, just the way it was meant to be. But the most beautiful features will be her eyes, as at only 35 will she lose that sense of innocence that one so often sees in the uninitiated ? instead she sees the world with benefit of experience with a sort of knowingness ? so you see at age 35, this woman is a ravishing beauty in every sense of the word to the thinking man. She can engage him at many levels of understanding that a younger woman cannot ? as she lacks life experience.

What makes all this possible is UNDERSTANDING of how our lives are not frozen along some timeline ? where we will always be sweet 21. Rather true beauty is in appreciating the changes that occur within that time line called life. Like the beauty each season offers to the senses ? It is only when we are conscious of NOW and not obsessing how tight our bums used to be at circa 18, that we can begin to appreciate the nuances in progression and how every stage of our life offers another layer of beauty waiting to be explored by the perceptive traveller in life ? this is what I can ONLY describe as the antitheses of what has been regularly feed into our brains by advertisements and marketing gurus.?

For a man his prime comes at 50. This is really the high point of his life ? that at least is based on my experience gleaned from older friends I keep. But back to the point ? at 50, a man would be who he was meant to be or never. He is cut out there and then, if he is a skirt chaser at 50, he will probably be a skirt chaser till the day either he or his dick expires. 50 is also the age when the man is the most sexy; there is a gravitas about him; a fatherly knowingness that seems to tell you. This is a lau chaiu. He is the guy that knows how to pick his battles like chess pieces ? if it favors him he will attack; if not he can wait it out ? he is in no rush. At 50 he knows how to play the game of life. As when a man reaches 50, the sleeper has awakened. He is suddenly aware of the fragility of life. He learns to use his energy sparingly, never dissipating it on trivial pursuits, except those that keep him razor sharp. At 50 he has suffered just enough set backs to learn how to cut all the right moves ? in his trade, he is professional that understands the art of dealing with people ? he tows the line even when it scissors his conscience. As at 50, he knows it doesn?t pay to go against the grain. It is only at 50 that a man acquires a mix of hardness and softness that will be his character till the day he dies ? at 50 he is really just starting to see the world with a practiced eye of a cognoscenti. At 50 a man would know the difference between sauvignon and pinot noire; he would realized if offered either smoked Salmon in the cafe Royale, London or the a Poisson de la creme supreme in Maxim?s in the 5th Arrondisment in Paris ? which to choose. At 50, he would have realized, those he cannot defeat, he should at least embrace and live and let live. At 50 he would know at least a dozen ways to sweep a woman off her feet; he may fly her to his favorite Jazz bar in Munich for a soiree; take her across the paraffin blue of the Med with his plastic sail boat and whip her a creme boiche cognac for breakfast in his buddies cafe in Cannes ? look out at the setting sun and exotic cars that trace across the shoreline from the balcony of the Hotel du Paradis in Monaco. And the best part is only at 50 would this man learn to do a thing cleanly. He never steps into a place that he can?t walk out of. At 50 all these goodies will come to you. From there on, to each stage of the progression in life ? you will see and experience another level of beauty (I am still researching this area will write more abt it when I have time to met up with my very old friends.)?

?When I was young my teachers called me a bad boy. So as time went by, they all called me a bad boy. This was how it started. There was a majestic flame of the forest just outside my school ? she was my friend. I called her aunty. As when I was young, I was told to address anyone taller by that name. So I called her aunty tree. As I didn?t learn the name of trees yet. I loved the tree. She was my friend. One day, they widened the road, another day a water pipe was laid ? and I began to notice ? the slow progression of auntie Trees death ? it started with the tips getting yellowish, the pale ochre. I knew something was wrong with Auntie Tree, so I tried to save her. As a boy I didn?t know about fertilizers, didn?t even know such things existed ? so I asked a neighbor who knew an uncle who came from a farming family ? he said piss on it. So that was what I did everyday at school ? I would cross the road and piss on the tree. One day there was this evil teacher who saw me giving the kiss of life to auntie Tree ? she is the ramrod Christian type lah; the ones that you know would end up as CEO of a convent if she was born in the dark ages and still masturbated at supersonic speed and still be counted to say her quota of whatever lah. She saw my natural act of relieving myself as the sign of the devil ? so picked trouble with me. She hauled up my parents; they said I needed to see a doctor; I had to be put away ? but the final straw was when they got the PE teacher to cane me. I remember the before, during and after ? the first whip is usually the most painful, by the second and third it mellowed out; beyond 6 or 7, it could only get better then a white numbing light ? one where nothing existed. But I kept pissing on the auntie Tree. As for the canings, they got harder ? so did I. I didn?t get it easy either with my schoolmates; their mothers heard about this and they too called me a bad boy ? so many of the other boys avoided me ? but I kept pissing on the auntie tree ? and somewhere in this mixture of pain, isolation and the need to just drink as much water and pissing as hard as I could at Auntie tree ? I realized, I?ve got to be my own man. You see it is very simple: I had no choice. A boy who does not have anything resembling a choice, learns resignation at a very young age ? and so I excepted this as life.?

I built a hard shell around myself ? like the one I once saw in comic, it was a force field. I remember it was orange and just translucent enough to believe no one could ever hurt me when I am in that amber light ? I called this place in my tiny body my sanctuary. No words will have power over my force field; no number of whippings from the PE teacher either; no amount of evil stares from nasty neighbors. I was alone, yet curiously at peace as best a child could be ? pissing everyday at auntie tree like a monk who only wakes up to meditate. And getting caned and teased and always alone.

One day I stopped pissing on auntie tree ? I figured, she was definitely out of harm?s way ? this was at least how my childish mind figured; as she was starting to flower again after two years of not having done so ? everyone was surprised when I no longer pissed on the tree opposite the school, they said that it was due to strict disciplining ? he will see the light and saw it he did! I even had a stage manager, that bitch that hailed Mary ten million times a day. She believed that divine intervention had been the sole cause of my keeping my pecker where God divined it to be.?

I knew otherwise ? you see people believe in what they have too to get by in life. All I really wanted to do was to save my friend auntie tree and now that the job was done I could put back my pecker. When I think back, there is a beauty in the innocence of youth just as there is probably undiscovered beauty in your own life ? when kids pop up or when you turn the corner around another decade.?

Many years later when I had grown up ? I knew he could see something that we all couldn?t in birds ? so I stretched out like a highly trained Mossad agent, I deliberately infiltrated the family, found out the husband gymed nearby at Safra; we even doubled pressed together; they invited me for dinner I was in their home ? and although the boy could not speak; I could understand what he saw in the indolent flight of birds ? his eyes were the same as the ones I had in the moment of my youth when I first realize I could talk to trees ? this boy and me share a kindred spirit hood; where they (even his father and mother) can never understand the beauty of his world) ? to them, its a hassle, a perpetual challenge to raise such a kid ? maybe if they didn?t watch so much TV, or didn?t feel the need to keep up with Joneses and simply stilled their minds, they too can begin to make out sweet tweets of birds in flight; they too might even be raptured by the simple beauty of a birds flight, their grace, ease and mastery ? their beauty. Your beauty.?

You see my friends, the world likes to say beauty is really in the eyes of the beholder. Not true. As to be at one with beauty, one is part of it, as it is part of one?s inner being ? one can only behold the beautiful moments, never encase it ? the look of a newborn baby ? the pride of bringing back the bacon ? all these things are beautiful. Even the simple act of giving up smoking so that there is more money for the monthly groceries and doing it with a quiet seriousness where you don?t throw your temper at your better half and kids is beautiful. Or going out to far off lands to create a better tomorrow for your loved one?s and facing up to the path you have chosen in life ? these things are also incredibly beautiful. May not realize it when you?re suffering and struggling. But when it all settles down and you look out across the vast expanse of your lands in Africa, Malaysia, Honduras or anywhere else ? and remember all these things that once cross your path at this age or other; it will bring a smile to you.?

I have allergies. I also have pets. And right now, it's shedding season. All of that shedding leads to a lot more sneezing than usual, which leads to a lot more vacuuming. But even an obsessive neat freak like me doesn't vacuum often enough to avoid the occasional tumbleweed of pet hair that mysteriously blows through the room when I turn on the ceiling fan.

That's where the $429.99 (direct) Neato XV-21 Pet & Allergy Automatic Vacuum Cleaner comes in. The XV-21 is an update to the XV-11, with upgraded filters and the use of a bristled brush designed to better collect pet hair. And it works. The XV-21 picked up a surprising amount of hair and dust I didn't even notice was on the floor. And it can be programmed to automatically clean as often as you like, even when you're not around. But its allergy-fighting powers are questionable, and it doesn't work well on tight corners. The XV-21 will keep your home free of pet hair tumbleweeds, but you'll still need to keep a traditional vacuum on hand if you like things squeaky clean.

Design and Setup
The XV-21 looks a heck of a lot like the XV-11 we saw in 2009. Unfortunately, both bots share a similar design aesthetic with the Super Nintendo video game system released back in 1990. The device is the same exact shade of Nintendo gray, with purple, orange, and black accents. And despite that fact that the back end is curved, it has a very blocky look. I realize it's a vacuum, but for something you'll watch zipping around your home, a slightly more attractive design would've been appreciated. Or at least a different shade of gray.

The XV-21 measures 13 by 12.5 by 4 inches (HWD) and weighs 8.2 pounds, which is right on par with other cleaning robots, like the Scooba 390?($499.99, 3 stars). There are five buttons used to control the vacuum: a start switch, two menu navigation buttons, a select button, and a back button. There's an easy-to-read 2.5-inch black and white display on top that allows you to control various options for the XV-21. You can set it to spot clean one particular area, for instance, or schedule it to turn on automatically and clean as often as you'd like.

Before using the XV-21, you first must plug in the charging station, which shares a similar look and feel to the vacuum itself. The station uses inductive charging, so the front of the XV-21 just needs to be pressed up against the charging block for it to work. It takes just under three hours to get a full charge. The device finished vacuuming my 550-square foot apartment in about 45 minutes, and had nearly half its battery life left. If the battery dies before the job is finished, the XV-21 will make its way back to the charger, charge back up, then go back out and finish the job.

Performance and Conclusions
Once you're fully charged, simply press the Start button and watch the XV-21 get to work. You'll be sure to know it's working, because the XV-21 is loud. The sound it makes upon starting is not dissimilar to that of a plane taking off, albeit at a slightly lower volume. It isn't as loud as a traditional vacuum, but the XV-21 takes a lot longer to clean the same amount of space as a traditional vacuum, and you tend to notice the noise a lot more when you're not the one doing the work.

The robot uses a laser-based room positioning technology to create a 360-degree view of the room, which allows it analyze furniture, doorways, and other obstacles within 13 feet in order to create the most efficient cleaning path. This worked surprisingly well in practice, as the XV-21 managed to systematically hit every part of my living room (even under the couch), with nary an accidental bump.

From the living room, it navigated out into the bedroom, then back through the living room and into the bathroom, but for some reason it never made its way into my kitchen. I had to place it there myself, and while the XV-21 did a fine job, I can't figure out why it wouldn't go in.

The big purple lid on top of the vacuum is the dirt bin. It fits in securely, but was easy to pop up when the XV-21 was finished. Now, I'm a pretty tidy guy, and I keep what I consider to be a pretty clean apartment. So I was shocked when I opened the XV-21's dirt bin to find it filled with dust and pet hair. I dust and vacuum regularly, so I wasn't expecting the XV-21 to pick up much more than the occasional crumb or stray dog hair. I was at once disconcerted to see all that I had missed, but pleased that the XV-21 managed to pick it up.

Additionally, the XV-21 handled the different surfaces in my apartment?hardwood floors, throw rugs, and tiles?with aplomb. I was especially impressed with the job it did on the large throw rug in my living room, which looked noticeably perkier after a visit from the XV-21.

Mysterious kitchen snub aside, the only major issue I had with the XV-21 is that it can't quite suck all of the pet hair out of a tight corner, which, of course, is where pet hair tends to accumulate. To be fair, even the main attachment on my Dyson vacuum has a hard time getting all the way into a corner?that's where the vacuum tube comes in. But that means you'll still need to keep a traditional vacuum cleaner on hand to pick up where the XV-21 can't.

Additionally, I'm dubious to the claims that this is an "Allergy" vacuum. Sure, cleaning up dirt, dust, and pet hair is sure to help remove plenty of allergens, but it's not like the XV-21 is releasing an antihistamine mist into the air as it cleans. This is no more an allergy-combatant than the handheld mini vacuum I had in my old college dorm room was. But the XV-21 will definitely do a better job of cleaning your floors.

Clean up is simple, too. Just remove the dirt bin, open its door, and empty the contents into the garbage. Pop it back into the XV-21, and you're ready to vacuum again.

If you already own an XV-11, there's no need to buy the XV-21. You can upgrade your model with the new bristle brush and updated filter for $60, then upgrade your device to the latest firmware. While the Neato XV-21 Pet & Allergy Automatic Vacuum Cleaner doesn't spray and scrub your floor like the Scooba 390, it works on a wider variety of surfaces, is programmable, and lasts longer. The iRobot?Roomba 770?($499.99, 4 stars), meanwhile, has a sleeker design and uses dirt sensors that allows it to pay closer attention to a particularly dirty spot on your floor. But if what you want is an extra hand to remove all that pesky pet hair, the XV-21 is a good, albeit pricey, tool. Just don't get rid of rid of your old push vacuum just yet.

Rome's Airport - Still Dead on Arrivals

I was pleased to hear that London's dreaded Terminal 5 received the world's accolades for being 'The Best Airport on Earth', especially after its missteps on opening (and even more unthinkable closings due to a few inches of snow this winter). ?Nonetheless, people love it.
I was tickled pink when just a few days after that disastrous opening, Rome's airport crowned their own international terminal, Terminal 5.? Simply put, it's a holding pen for people going to the USA where they can go thru U.S. "security", one of the biggest jokes in the age of aviation. [But that's another story - although as a serious frequent flyer who works for our govt put it to me on the plane over to the USA, 'the TSA is terrific about going after yesterday's perpetrators...']
Anyway, my Rome airport experience last week reminded me just how unfathomable it is to witness how we can shuttle people in a tube through the air, but can't get them in and around airports.
It started with the (much lauded, by yours truly) new signage over at Rome's airport. The ADR (Rome Airport Authority) has really made progress in devising ways to streamline traffic so you don't feel so much like a rat in a maze by the time you get to security. ?Upon our approach, we were thrilled to find a sort of 'short cut' posted to Terminal 5. ?Naturally, the TERMINAL 5:?NEXT RIGHT arrow led over to the Cargo Terminal; the correct language being, SECOND RIGHT: but hey, who's counting?!
Rejoicing in our agility in averting the cement outpost while rounding that first roundabout, I started to think better of it. ?I suspected there'd be another 8-way roundabout and we'd probably be left hanging as to which way to go. ?But before I could finish my "Rome Auditorium theory of sign-posting"?, there we were. ?We went round and round the roundabout a few times, before determining that the Terminal would not be where one might think it should be. ?And eureka!?we followed that hunch right up to the front door.

I made my way to the third line: x-ray screening. It was my lucky day, because just as I passed through those pearly gates; barefoot and my tablet carefully held against my torso?(and feeling a bit like Moses), the power went out in the entire terminal. ?I looked back to find in my wake ever-growing lines, elevators and escalators ground to a halt. ?People in wheelchairs sat gathering like ducks in a pond, wondering just how they would make it up to the shuttle. ?I gave a little skip of delight at my good fortune and went headed for the terminal.

Incredibly, there was no back-up generator to allow the airport to carry on with their business. ?That is, the business of pushing people through to their destinations. ?But once inside the terminal, I found that business was brisk: it just had nothing to do with the travel industry. ?All of the shops, despite the black-out, were lit up, cash registers ringing like Las Vegas slot machines. ?Travelers may be stuck down in security, but up here, the cash was flowing freely.?
Little by little, hundreds of flyers made their way in, to now wait out the delays due to the black-out. ?In waiting rooms that seated 24 people per gate. ?The immense transfer desk takes up enough room for 200, and I've only ever seen it staffed by two. ?The crowding just to get down your gangway was nothing short of a run on banks in modern Greece. ?
Finally elbowing my way onto the plane, people joked how boarding in Rome was not unlike driving through Italy. Perhaps when it comes to transportation, it's the only way we've been accustomed to doing things.

Crowds to crown queen's 60th anniversary party

LONDON (Reuters) - Queen Elizabeth will celebrate 60 years on the throne next month along with huge crowds expected for a pop concert at Buckingham Palace, a grand procession through the streets of London and a 1,000-strong flotilla along the River Thames.

The Diamond Jubilee comes just over a year after the royal wedding of Prince William, the queen's grandson, to Kate Middleton, a spectacular display of pomp and pageantry which has boosted the monarchy's popularity at home and abroad.

While international media attention has focused on the young Duke and Duchess of Cambridge since their marriage, in early June it is the queen who will be in the limelight as she becomes only the second British monarch to mark the milestone.

Queen Victoria also made it to 60 years in 1897, although the vast British Empire she reigned over at that time has all but vanished and royalty has become a largely symbolic institution with few real powers.

The queen has less than four years to go to become the longest serving British monarch, but she trails Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej as the longest-serving living head of state.

Despite her age, courtiers and many commentators believe that 86-year-old Elizabeth remains an important figurehead in Britain and beyond, a symbol of stability and service that has taken on added weight during straitened economic times.

A poll published in Britain's Guardian newspaper on Friday showed public support for the queen was at a record high in spite of harsh economic times and growing cynicism towards politicians following a number of high-profile scandals.

The survey showed 69 percent of respondents thought Britain would be worse off without the monarchy, with 22 percent saying it would be better off - the largest margin between the opposing views since the poll was first commissioned in 1997.

"Historically people have turned to symbols of certainty, probity and solidity in times of crisis," said Robert Hardman, author of a recent biography of the monarch called "Our Queen" and a writer for the royal-friendly Daily Mail.

"People feel she's lived through all sorts of crises, not least the Second World War, and she's dependable."

FOUR-DAY WEEKEND

Members of the royal family have been marking the jubilee all year with tours both national and international, but the climax of the celebrations is a four-day weekend from June 2-5.

On Saturday, the queen indulges her life-long passion for horses with a visit to the Epsom Derby.

Sunday has been billed "The Big Jubilee Lunch" encouraging thousands of Britons to spill out on to the streets and share a meal with neighbours and friends.

Also on Sunday, arguably the most spectacular event takes place on the River Thames snaking through central London.

Up to 1,000 vessels from around the world will assemble to accompany the queen and her husband on the Royal Barge as they travel along the river, watched by a flag-waving, cheering crowd expected to number more than a million.

Paul McCartney and Elton John are among the artists set to perform at a pop concert outside Buckingham Palace on Monday, when a network of 2,012 beacons will also be lit across Britain and the Commonwealth of mostly former British colonies.

On Tuesday, the jubilee weekend concludes with a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral and a short carriage procession from Westminster to Buckingham Palace where the queen and her family will appear on the balcony.

Unlike the younger generation of royals whose status borders on that of celebrities, the queen has been a quieter, less splashy presence.

If anything, she may suffer from over-familiarity in the eyes of the British public, which sees her face on coins and stamps and in countless photographs of her in colour-coordinated outfits while on official visits.

"We slightly overlooked the fact that she's done it for 60 years and suddenly realised that that's a great achievement," Hardman told Reuters.

"The jubilee coincides with a marked revival in interest in the royal family -- it's been a very good few years for them and not just because of the royal wedding."

MEDIA MESMERISED, POLLS UNCLEAR

Much of the British media and many broadcasters from the United States and beyond have given the monarchy overwhelmingly positive coverage in recent years, particularly since the 2011 wedding which was watched by up to two billion people worldwide.

Royalists say opinion polls such as the one in the Guardian have consistently shown solid support for the monarchy among the British public.

The republican movement, which has struggled to find a voice during the recent resurgence in royal interest, argues that the statistics tell a different picture.

Anti-monarchist group Republic quoted findings last month showing only 41 percent of Britons believed the royal family was a unifying force with 32 percent saying it made no difference.

Stephen Haseler, a prominent academic and critic of the monarchy, called the jubilee plans "unbelievable" at a time when the country was in a recession.

"This is Disneyland," he told Reuters. "She (the queen) is going to come down the River Thames in a barge, for God's sake, with all kinds of fireworks. This is kids' stuff, this is what you take kids to Disneyland to see and it's our head of state.

"You should be more dignified in a really serious recession. You ought to cut down on this nonsense. It's making us a bit of a laughing stock. What have we got to celebrate?"

The royal family officially costs taxpayers between 30 and 40 million pounds a year ($47-63 million), although the total does not include security and other outgoings. Republic estimates the cost at over 200 million pounds.

The following decade, which included an enthusiastically celebrated golden jubilee in 2002 and the deaths of her mother and sister in the same year, saw the queen's public standing rebound.

The majority of commentators believe that while the queen is alive, the monarchy is unlikely to face a serious crisis.

That could change when her son Charles accedes the throne, some argue, because he is regarded as less predictable and diplomatic. William and Kate would be popular as king and queen, but they could have a long wait ahead.

Two teams of either graders from Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart have been named winners in the 2012 National STEM Video Game Challenge. The Stuart students are the only girls who won awards in the competition dominated by boys.

Winning Stuart team members include Julia Weingaertner, Sarah Lippman, Chloe Mario, Madeleine Lapuerta and Emma Froehlich. The six girls are among the 28 middle and high school students from across the U.S. who were honored for their original game designs.

Both teams were awarded prizes in the PBS KIDS Ready to Learn category of the National STEM Video Game Challenge. The annual competition seeks to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and math learning by tapping into students? passions for playing and making video games. The competition was inspired by President Barack Obama?s?Educate to Innovate campaign. Seventeen games created by individuals and teams of students in eight categories were selected as winners from a group of more than 3,700 entries.

The girls from Stuart designed and programmed their video games as part of the coursework for 8th grade computer science class with instructor Alicia Testa.

?In January when we started this project, the girls had no computer programming experience. They faced a steep learning curve from the beginning. Not only did they rise to the occasion, they surpassed all expectations,? Testa said. ?Working in groups of two or three, by the end of the trimester, 10 completed video games were submitted to the challenge.?

Weingaertner and Lippman worked together to design and create a video game called ?Animal Inequities? that uses animated sharks and fish to teach the math concepts of greater than and less than. Lapuerta, Mario and Froehlich developed ?Math Racing Mania? (shown in the video above) in which players get to choose a racing car to drive through roads by answering the correct answers to math problems shown on the screen.

?In addition to computer programming, this project required important skills such as collaboration, communication, planning and problem solving,? said Stuart head of school Patty Fagin. ?Research tells us that these girl-centric skills are invaluable to careers in STEM fields, including developing video games, a field dominated by men.?

Stuart has focused on elevating STEM education, beginning at the earliest grades, to show girls that science, technology, engineering and math can be fun and can open doorways to countless opportunities. School officials said the school strives for every graduate to be comfortable and confident in basic STEM skills, and ready to pursue a career in a STEM field if she chooses. In January of this year, Stuart announced the formation of a STEM advisory task force made up of some of the nations leading thinkers to help conquer the so-called ?girl gap? in the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines.

?We are very proud of the work all eighth grade students put into the National STEM Challenge,? Fagin said.? ?In the end, they all realized that hard work and perseverance yields results. It is icing on the cake that not just one, but two all-girl Stuart teams received national recognition for their creativity and ingenuity.?

The Stuart students and their teacher? traveled to Washington, DC Monday, where they were honored at an event sponsored by Microsoft at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Each winner was awarded an AMD based laptop computer, travel to and from Washington, DC, and subscriptions to Brain Pop magazine and Gamestar Mechanic. Each team will also be awarded $2,000 for their school.

Brian Aslspach, executive vice president and general manager of Gamestar Mechanic at E-Line Media, one of the National STEM Challenge presenting companies, was at Stuart to congratulate the students today.

The girls also received praise from a writer at Wired.com yesterday. Geekmom columnist Amy Craft wrote: ?Honestly, these games are better than 90 percent of the educational games in the app store. That kids are creating games that younger kids can learn from gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, and that the winners of this particular challenge were all girls makes me feel like we?re headed in the right direction for getting more girls involved in future STEM careers.?

Eugene Polley, co-creator of the wireless TV remote, passes away aged 96

Eugene Polley, inventor of the wireless remote control has passed away aged 96. Working for Zenith Electronics, he developed the FlashMatic control in 1955, using beams of light directed at photo-sensors in a television to change channel or volume. Like all pioneering technology it had some quirks -- it couldn't distinguish between the light from the remote and direct sunlight, causing inadvertent channel changes during summer days. Dr. Robert Adler (1913 - 2007) superseded the technology with his ultrasonic "clicker," but Polley's system would be reborn with the advent of infra-red remotes. He subsequently went on to work on the push-button radio and helped to develop the video disc -- the predecessor of DVD. Both men were honored with Emmy Awards in 1997 and countless other plaudits for their engineering achievement, as well as knowing that a sizable proportion of the planet use their work on a daily, nay hourly basis. Our thoughts are with his family.

Obama on Afghan: Leave on time, no 'perfect' end

CHICAGO (AP) ? President Barack Obama and leaders around the globe locked in place an Afghanistan exit path Monday that will still keep their troops fighting and dying there for two more years, acknowledging there never will be point at which they can say, "This is all done. This is perfect."

Obama, presiding over a 50-nation war coalition summit in his hometown, summed up the mood of all the nations by saying the Afghanistan that will be left behind will be stable enough for them to depart ? good enough after a decade of war? but still loaded with troubles.

The war that began in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks will finish at the end of 2014.

"I don't think there's ever going to be an optimal point where we say, 'This is all done. This is perfect. This is just the way we wanted it,'" Obama said as the NATO summit closed. "This is a process, and it's sometimes a messy process."

Obama never spoke of victory.

Afghan forces for the first time will take over the lead of the combat mission by the middle of 2013, a milestone moment in a long, costly transition of control. Even in a backup role, U.S. forces and all the rest will face surprise attacks and bombings until the war's end.

Wary of creating a vacuum in a volatile region, the nations also promised a lasting partnership with Afghanistan, meaning many years of contributing tax dollars, personnel and political capital after the end of their soldiers' combat. The United States has already cut its own deal with Afghanistan along those lines, including a provision that allows U.S. military trainers and special forces to remain in Afghanistan after the war closes.

In an escalating election-year environment, Obama was as at the center of the action in Chicago, beaming and boasting about the city's performance in hosting the event. Noisy protesters loaded the city's streets at times, which Obama called just the kind of free expression NATO defends.

Tensions with Pakistan undermined some of the choreographed unity. Pakistan has not yet agreed to end the closure of key transit routes into Afghanistan ? retaliation for American airstrikes that accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers months ago ? and the issue hung over the summit.

Obama had no official talks with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, although the two chatted briefly. Obama spoke of progress on the standoff and with Zardari overall, but he added: "I don't want to paper over real challenges there. There's no doubt that there have been tensions."

On Afghanistan, led by Obama, the partners are in essence staying the course. They stuck with a timeline long established and underscored that there will be no second-guessing the decision about when to leave.

Since 2010, they have been planning to finish the war at the end of 2014, even as moves by nations such as France to pull combat troops out early have tested the strength of the coalition. The shift to have Afghan forces take the lead of the combat mission next year has also been expected. Leaders presented it as a significant turning point in the war.

It will be "the moment when throughout Afghanistan people can look out and see their own troops and police stepping up to the challenge," said the NATO chief, Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

What the world is poised to leave behind is an Afghanistan still riddled with poverty, corruption and political instability.

Yet, out of money and patience, the U.S.-led partnership said it is confident Afghanistan will be stable and prepared enough to at least be able to protect itself ? and, in turn, prevent its territory from becoming a launching pad for international terrorism.

It is time, Obama said, to "responsibly bring this war to an end."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said the leaders were "making a decisive and enduring commitment to the long-term future of Afghanistan. The message to the Afghan people is that we will not desert them. And the message to the insurgency is equally clear: You cannot win on the battlefield. You should stop fighting and start talking."

The political stakes are high for the U.S. president, who will go before voters in November with tens of thousands more troops in Afghanistan than when we took office. His emphasis will remain that he is methodically winding down the war after closing out the one in Iraq; U.S. voters desperate for better economic times have long stopped approving of the war mission.

NATO said it will keep providing "long-term political and practical support" to Afghanistan after 2014 but added: "This will not be a combat mission."

Despite the size of the coalition, the war remains a United States-dominated effort.

The U.S. has 90,000 of the 130,000 foreign forces in the war. Obama has pledged to shrink that to 68,000 by the end of September but has offered no details on the withdrawal pace after that, other than to say it will be gradual.

The fighting alliance called negotiation the key to ending the insurgency in Afghanistan, but avoided mentioning the Taliban by name. The insurgents walked away from U.S.-led talks in March, and urged the NATO nations to follow the lead of France in pledging to remove combat forces ahead of schedule.

The alliance agreed on a fundraising goal to underwrite the Afghan armed forces after the international fighting forces depart. The force of about 230,000 would cost about $4.1 billion annually ? the bulk of it paid by the United States and countries that have not been part of the fighting force. U.S. and British officials said during the summit that pledges total about $1 billion a year so far and that fundraising is on track to make up the rest.
