The Price Is Right But Confusing

As per usual, Google put out various, elaborate April Fools Day jokes, which only reminded everyone how much time and money the tech company has to spend on projects that aren't core products like, ahem, Google Reader.?For those too busy to follow along, The Next Web has a running list of the myriad pranks. And while some of the antics, like the pirate treasure map,?are harmless and cute, others hit too close to home.

Violin Science: Stradivari, Guarneri Aimed To Mimic Human Voice, Soprano Study Suggests

By: Tia Ghose, LiveScience Staff Writer
Published: 03/29/2013 11:12 AM EDT on LiveScience

Virtuosos who describe the singing voice of a violin may be on to something. The great violin makers, such as Stradivari and Guarneri, may have designed violins to mimic the human voice, new research suggests.

The research, described in the current issue of Savart Journal, found the violin produced several vowel sounds, including the Italian "i" and "e" sounds and several vowel sounds from French and English.

Study author Joseph Nagyvary, an emeritus biochemistry professor at Texas A&M University,?previously proved that the violin masters Stradivari and Guarneri del Ges? had soaked their wood in brine and borax to fight a worm infestation that swept through Italy in the 1700s. Those chemicals treatments led to the unique sounds that violin makers have struggled to reproduce.

But he had also long argued that the great violin masters were making violins with more humanlike voices than any others of the time. [25 Amazing Facts from Science]

"It has been widely held that violins 'sing' with a female soprano voice," Nagyvary said in a statement.

To test that claim, Nagyvary recorded Metropolitan opera singer Emily Pulley singing a series of vowel sounds. He then compared those sounds with a 1987 recording of virtuoso Itzhak Perlman playing a scale on a 1743 Guarneri violin.

"I analyzed her sound samples by computer for harmonic content and then using state-of-the art phonetic analysis to obtain a 2-D map of the female soprano vowels. Each note of a musical scale on the violin underwent the same analysis, and the results were plotted and mapped against the soprano vowels," Nagyvary said in a statement.

The two "voices" could be mapped on the same scale, with the violin creating several English and French vowel sounds, as well as two Italian vowel sounds.

The findings suggest that makers of Guarneri and Stradivarius violins of the 1700s were striving to imitate the human voice in their instruments. Guarneri violins now routinely sell for between $10 million and $20 million.

The new analysis could also provide a more objective way to rate violin quality.

"For 400 years, violin prices have been based almost exclusively on the reputation of the maker ? the label inside of the violin determined the price tag," Nagyvary said in a statement. "The sound quality rarely entered into price consideration, because it was deemed inaccessible. These findings could change how violins may be valued."

Springtime Adaptogens, Stress Reduction, Weight Loss, High-level ...

Here comes The Robert Scott Bell Show (GCN) broadcast special Easter broadcast for March 31, 2013, from 1 PM to 3 PM EDT LIVE ! Call in and let your voice be heard! 1-800-259-5791.

Stephen Rogers

Hour 1 ? Springtime Adaptogens, Stress Reduction, Weight Loss, High-level Fitness with Stephen Rogers and More!

Autism risk not increased by early vaccines: study There is no link between receiving a number of vaccines early in life and autism, researchers said on Friday. Why is this study garbage? RSB will be covering this as it unravels all week?

What is stress? Stephen Rogers is back from ShenTrition for the special holiday edition of The RSB Show, with plenty of adaptogens to help us though it! It?s easiest to begin by understanding ?stressors??the forces that can cause a stress response in the body. A stressor is anything that affects the body?s ability to maintain homeostasis or optimal balance. Generally, stressors can be broken down into five major categories:

  • Mental ? personal thought patterns, repetitive self-talk, self-image chatter, and contemplating major life changes and overwhelming responsibilities
  • Emotional ? the whole gamut of emotion, both pleasant and unpleasant (ie ?anger, joy, longing, irritability, concern, fear, sadness, lust, grief, excitement)
  • Physical ? includes strenuous or repetitive activity at work or in our exercise routines; it also refers to nutritional issues, sleep patterns, pregnancy, health challenges, injury, and anything else that directly affects the body
  • Environmental ? all the elements in our day-to-day environments including climate and temperature changes; electromagnetic radiation (ie ? wi-fi networks and electronics); sunlight; microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, molds, and parasites); nutrient-depleted, heavy-metal contaminated, GMO, or irradiated food sources; household and industrial chemicals in our homes and foods; and stimulants or controlled substances
  • Spiritual ? all our internal wrestling with personal direction and life purpose

Stephen Heuer

Hour 2 ? Brain Balance, Energy Support, Stephen Heuer and More!

Stephen Heuer returns to discuss Brain Balance and Energy Support.? Do you find the desire to read overcome by the desire to be entertained by TV? Would you like to love to learn more rather than settling for entertainment only? Do you have the level of energy you?d like to have and does it last all day long? Have you had mercury fillings? Have you ever consumed drugs or alcohol? Have you ever had a viral infection? Have you have been traumatized? A yes to any of these questions can the cause for cellular damage and lifelong brain imbalances and deficient energy levels.

Did you know that when you?ve been exposed to mercury or heavy metals or drugs or alcohol you?ve damaged the histone portion of your DNA and in turn your cells become underactive in most instances and hyperactive is a few instances.

Epigenetics determines the expression of cells. It is what controls the cells ability to develop proteins for the liver or the eye. This is all controlled by the histones around which the DNA is wrapped.

Certain nutrients have a determinative role is which genes are expressed or silenced in different tissues, and proper balance between these nutrient factors is essential for good mental health and optimal energy levels.

Many mental disorders result from environmental factors that cause genes to behave or express themselves improperly. For example nutrient imbalances

Or toxic exposures can alter gene expression rates and may be the root cause of numerous psychiatric disorders. [1]

This under functioning of the cells causes lower levels of energy, slower recovery after energy expenditure, lower levels of neurotransmitters produced and or not being reabsorbed for reuse quickly enough. This impairment produces the various brain chemistry imbalances that lead to the imbalanced states of: Schizophrenia (splitting of mental functions), Bipolar, Depression, Autism, ADHD, Alzheimer?s, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), etc.

Nutrients have now been used over the last 35 years on 30,000 people with mental imbalances. The degree of positive results is off the charts impressive.? The book that chronicles these results is called ?Nutrient Power Heal Your Biochemistry and Heal Your Brain? by William Walsh Ph.D.

For persons currently using anti-depressant medications, it would be wise to read this book and consult with the Author about testing and nutrient therapy. For persons struggling with diet, herbs and supplement manipulation to create the optimum energy and brain balance you?d like then consider trying the combination of products found in this package below.

Brain Balance and Energy Support Package

Ocean Ormus (supports mineral electrical conductivity of the brain and the speed with which signals can be transmitted).

Avinocort: (supports the adrenals; these glands are often fatigue and the hub of the energy wheel in the body. If you support these tired glands with Avinocort, the improved energy and productivity can be very positive).

Homocysteine Factors: (consists of Folate [as Metafolin], B-12 [as Methylcobalamin], Trimethylglycine, B-6, and Ascorbyl Palmitate) This formula is a powerful aid to the creation of neurotransmitters and to the reduction in the levels of pyrrole?s, a substance needed by the body, but in excess amounts is associated with anxiety, mood swings, poor short term memory, reading disorder, morning nausea, absence of dream recall, and frequent anger and rages.)

Niacin: (helps increase transport proteins that remove excessive dopamine) Reduces anxiety!

Zinc 30: (as Zinc picolinate). More than 90% of persons diagnosed with depression, behavioral disorders, ADHD, autism and schizophrenia exhibit depleted plasma zinc levels.

Message from Stephen Heuer: For improving my ability to sleep, here is what I?m in the early stages of experimenting with and have had some success. I have taken the Homocysteine Factors, Niacin and Zinc in the morning and by 2 pm the second dosage. This sets the stage for the following to then help me to sleep. At bedtime I take 1- 5-HTP 100-200 mg and Melatonin. This has helped me to get a 4-hour window of restful sleep.

I?m finding that I cannot take Avinocort in the afternoon as it may interfere with my sleep. I?m also finding that the dosage of Ocean Ormus must be kept to maybe 1/4th a teaspoon in the morning only. Ocean Ormus for my particular sleep needs, needs to be a lower amount as it may cause too much brain activation if taken in larger amounts. This is still under experimentation for myself. I?ve had others report very favorable results with the entire Brain Balance package taken.

The ideal goal is to dissolve the damaged cells and have them replaced by stem cells produced within your body. So that life long supplementation of this degree can be discontinued. To achieve the higher production of stem cells, ones diet needs to be ideal. For me this is a mostly raw and 100% vegetarian diet. In addition to this the technology known as the Wellness Rings can increase stem cells by 60 to 70 fold. Here is a link to the Wellness Rings: http://www.sgn80.com/wellness-rings

Food is either supporting optimal expression of DNA or hindering or damaging it. It is my contention that we are meant to be mostly fruit and vegetable eating beings and that these foods influence the optimal expression of the DNA. In our day and age of toxicity and previous damage to the body from toxins and trauma?s, dietary modifications from the ideal seem to be essential to function one?s best. Personally I use and advocate the following diet. Raw Milk, Raw Eggs, unheated whey protein, raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and some cooked grains.

People Are Surprisingly Upset About Google's Non-Easter-Themed Doodle

A handsome picture of legendary American labor leader Cesar Chavez replaced the second "o" in the Google logo on Sunday, a tip of the hat that Google users thought amounted to ignoring Easter. The users were not happy and took their rage to Twitter, where tweeters slipped into all-caps and threatened to switch to Bing. People disapprove of Google's often whimsical doodles all the time, but this weekend, the Cesar Chavez tribute, pegged to would have been the activist's 86th birthday, appears to have struck a nerves. Easter is one of those holidays that some people (read: religious Christians) take more seriously than others, and it's not hard to see how they might take Google's slight seriously. It also didn't help that dozens of people thought that Google was paying tribute to Hugo Chavez, the recently deceased long-time dictator of Venezuela, rather than Cesar Chavez, the civil rights activist.?

RELATED: Google's New Privacy Policy Doesn't Fly In Europe

This is a surprise because Google tends to avoid strong religious themes on the doodles. In fact, the company hasn't had an Easter-themed doodle since 2000. Last year, for instance, it saluted the 200th birthday of Robert Bunsen of Bunsen burner fame. Despite the backlash, the company tried to play it cool. "We enjoy celebrating holidays at Google but, as you may imagine, it's difficult for us to choose which events to highlight on our site," a Google spokesperson told?Business Insider?on Sunday evening. "Sometimes for a given date we feature an historical event or influential figure that we haven't in the past." Easter already had it's time in the spotlight.

Google wasn't winning too many friends on Sunday otherwise. The company's April Fool'w joke wasn't terribly well received. Long story short: Google jokingly announced that it had launched Google Nose, a new technology that lets you smell search. It actually sounds pretty awesome. Unfortunately it's totally fake, unlike that ill will over the Easter-free doodle.?

Late equalizer boosts LA

It?s still troubling to see all those empty seats at BMO Field, once the gold standard in passionate MLS support.

Hopefully the fans who have abandoned TFC (or stashed their scarves for the time being) will recognize that a better product can be found these days along Exhibition Place, where Ryan Nelsen has the Reds organized and working hard for one another.

Unfortunately, Nelsen and his side still have miles to go in terms of getting the personnel where it needs to be, and in teaching the team how to manage matches and situations.

We saw it all there Saturday as TFC gave up an early goal, rallied to take a lead and held that margin until stoppage time. But a mistake in the back gave young Galaxy attacker Jose Villareal a chance to demonstrate his opportunism and his athleticism.

His late goal was the equalizer in a 2-2 draw at BMO Field.

Here are a few quick thoughts, followed by the highlights.

  • Richard Eckersley, once a right back, then a center back and then a right back again ? he?s now apparently a left back.
  • ?We?ve mentioned before about how TFC still needs more quality in several areas, something club president Kevin Payne is presumably addressing. One is right I the middle of the park, where TFC were clearly outmanned over stretches Saturday. Juninho and Marcelo Sarvas ? good MLS midfield men, but not great ? mostly had their way through the center.
  • Donovan (pictured from Satruday)? Meh. Then again, what did we expect? Getting him on the field was about elevating his fitness, as much as anything.

(MORE: Landon Donovan back on field for LA Galaxy)

  • TFC was just not a bit creative for most of Saturday afternoon. Luis Silva?s second-half introduction helped (and a clever little something surely helped on TFC?s second goal), but the Reds need more imagination. So far, too many of the TFC goals tends to rise out of Robert Earnshaw?s opportunism.
  • Hard to say what TFC defender Darel Russell might have been thinking with a ?clearing? header that he put right back in front of his own goal in stoppage time. Anywhere else and the Reds probably get all three points. A draw against the champs, even at home, isn?t terrible for TFC. But conceding a late equalizer (losing two points in the process) is a real bummer, and surely feels like a loss for Nelsen and Co.

Highlights of Saturday?s match:

Tension in Kenya ahead of court's decision on vote

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Lawyers and observers have started gathering inside the courtroom in the Kenyan capital where six Supreme Court judges are expected to deliver a judgment in the petition challenging the results of the March 4 election which declared Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya's next president.

Armed police patrolled the area surrounding the court in Nairobi where crowds gathered Saturday afternoon to hear the decision. Tension mounted across Kenya in anticipation of the court's ruling. The judges could uphold or invalidate the victory of Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's first president who faces serious charges at the International Criminal Court.

Lawyers for Kenyatta's challenger, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, charged before the Supreme Court that the election was marred by irregularities and that Kenyatta did not win enough votes to avoid a runoff election.

Cantina della Casa | James Ridenour

One of the great things about Melbourne is that you don?t have to pay a fortune to eat well. ?Enter Cantina della Casa, open only two weeks this cafe/bar is already one of my absolute favourites. ?The cantina is the newest brainchild from the same people who brought you Bar Lourinha in Lt Collins Street (one of my favourite wine bars for great food, wine and service) and the restaurant?Casa Ciuccio (located next door to the cantina).

The cantina (which can be loosely translated as ?refreshment room?) is amiable from the word go. ?Super friendly staff, lots of choices for food and drink, indoor/outdoor seating and a ?modern decor with a whimsical latin influence, all situated on one of the hottest culinary streets in Melbourne; Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

The menu comprises of beautiful salads (you can have your choice of three salads for a very reasonable $11), empanadas (pastry with filling), artisan sandwiches and home-made sweets to finish. ?Of course there are several libations to enjoy along with the excellent food.

On my first visit I had my choice of three incredibly beautiful salads comprising of tomato ricotta and basil, a chickpea and s?lish salad and a couscous cashew and parley combination. ?The staff mentioned that there are always several vegetarian options on offer so no worries for carnivore/vego groups of friends. ? The salads impressed me so much I returned the next day to sample a divine goat empanadas with aioli and the tomato salad as an encore. ?If you haven?t tried goat it is a wonderful meat extensively used in Caribbean and Latin cuisines. ?It is beautiful and well worth a try. ? The empanadas did not disappoint with flakey pastry and a rich meaty filling, perfect with the aioli.

This cantina can be easily tried without maxing out your credit card. ?It?s a perfect place to head out with friends for something to eat, some great wine or a few drinks. ?I know I will be back again and I am also certain I will be trying Casa Ciuccio?which is the cantina?s sister restaurant located next door.

Cantina della Casa is open Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm and weekends from 10am to 5pm. ? The cantina is located at 13 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy and can be contacted on ?03 9090 7870 or on Twitter @Casa Ciuccio.
